Wildfire preparedness is a community effort, and the residents of Green Mountain Drive recently proved just how effective—and simple—that effort can be. In a fantastic display of neighborhood collaboration, residents banded together to clear hazardous woody debris from their properties, utilizing a valuable resource provided by the Loveland Fire Rescue Authority (LFRA): Community Slash Bins.

A Neighborhood Success Story

The project was a resounding success. Working together, the Green Mountain Drive neighbors were able to fill not just one, but four large slash bins with branches, logs, and brush. This significant reduction in fuel load is a proactive step toward creating defensible space and enhancing the safety of their entire neighborhood.

Participants described the process as "very easy and helpful." A key part of that smooth experience was the support from LFRA Wildfire Program Coordinator, Matt DeDecker, who personally coordinated the logistics, dropping off the empty bins where they were needed and hauling them away once they were filled.

Below is a picture of local resident Doug S., standing in front of one of the nearly full bins, showcasing the scale of their collective cleanup effort.

How Your Neighborhood Can Get Involved

Are you ready to follow Green Mountain Drive's lead? The LFRA's Community Slash Bin program is designed to help neighbors dispose of large volumes of slash efficiently.

Here is what you need to know to organize a slash bin for your area:

1. Coordinate with Your Neighbors: This program is best suited for community-wide cleanup days. Gather interest from your neighbors to ensure you have enough material to justify a bin and enough hands to help fill it!

2. Understand the Requirements: To keep the program running smoothly and free of charge for approved materials, the LFRA has a straightforward deposit policy:

  • Refundable Deposit: A $500.00 deposit is required for each slash bin you order. Payment can be made by check or card.

  • Purpose: This deposit ensures that only approved slash materials (natural vegetation like branches and brush) are placed in the bins. It covers the cost of time and disposal for any non-approved items (trash, construction waste, etc.) found inside.

  • No Disposal Fee: There is no disposal fee for the slash itself.

  • Get Your Refund: Once LFRA picks up the bin and verifies it contains only approved materials, your full deposit will be refunded.

3. Request a Bin: To request slash bins for your neighborhood cleanup or to learn more about approved materials, please contact the LFRA directly. You can reach out to Matt DeDecker, Wildfire Program Coordinator, through the contact information found on the LFRA Community Wildfire Preparedness page.

Let's work together to make our communities safer and more resilient to wildfire!
